My own exhibit

For my own display for the exhibition I decided on taking a similar approach to what I saw and was very much inspired by at the Birmingham Art Museum.

I felt it was vastly important that my display would reflect the art that would be being exhibited.

I intend my display to be very simple, yet will cater a modern, minimalist art gallery-esque appearance, with the negative wall space and visuals. Certainly with this style of display it will be the artwork that will be the main focal point.

I took liberty of drafting up a few rough sketches of how i'd like to display my work at the exhibition.

I would have a wall with a variety of my photography and design work being displayed, bearing similarities to how the work was displayed at the Birmingham Art Museum which you can see from my primary research, next to the work on the wall i'd also like to be able to draw and paint information, logos etc relating to the work. I feel it would compliment and deliver a nice contrast, you'd have the wall mounted work and then some nice hand rendered type relating to the piece.

 In front of the wall would be a desk with a Mac that would showcase my website to visitors and on the desk would be my piece of promotional material, which i'm certain will be a business card.

Either side of the wall if I see fit I may also display more work on plinths.

A very simple, traditional approach seen as many galleries up and down the country, such as the V&A but executed in the correct fashion can deliver a very stylish, modern vibe, again characteristics that relate to the work that will be on display.

Task One

For researching a an exhibition I visited the Birmingham Art Museum where they had numerous art exhibitions on display ranging from classic art pieces to historical artefacts to more contemporary art.  Characteristics of the exhibitions and how the art was curated was very similar to other exhibitions and galleries that I’ve visited in the past.

Displaying the art on the wall they would use a lot of negative wall space with minimal pieces of art on the walls and a lot of empty floor space for the audience to move around and view the art. It’s a very simple and well known way of displaying pieces in a gallery or exhibit but it works and I feel it really allows the art to stand out. However saying that at times the rooms and galleries can look a little too empty and desolate.

Other touches I noticed from the exhibitions at the museum was again simple touches that I’ve seen before they would next to the art include a little brief description of the artist and the piece being displayed, something I believe would be a nice touch for the exhibitions at Worcester . Lighting was kept very minimal as well I noticed.

I like the touch as you can see below. Instead of actually displaying the text on a board next to the piece actually the type is printed on the wall. I feel at my exhibition taking inspiration from this way of displaying work I could come up and design some nice typography to display on the walls next to my work at the exhibit .

As you can a lot of negative wall space, dim lighting, empty floor spaces are the main characteristics from the gallery.

I’d like for my work to be displayed in a similar fashion. Negative wall space and select few pieces on the wall a mix of my design work and my photography work as well as a Mac where visitors would be able to view my website that I will have created as part of my IS.  It is quite a simple and traditional style of displaying work in a gallery and exhibit but I feel if the work is of good quality it really works well. I feel in the context of my work, especially some of my photography pieces it has potential.

Other ideas I was tempted or would consider is displaying the work and creating kind of an old fashioned cinema experience. With the traditional seating, screen, curtain that would hide and reveal the work and traditional food and beverages that would be served at the intermission of the film.

Also I like the idea of including an interactive element with my exhibition rather than something where the visitors would just walk and observe the work. I feel the cinema experience, is quite an immersive one.
